Kirby Wildlife Park - Keeper Experience - Information Pack

Due to the large number of inquiries sent to the park from young people interested in working with animals, Kirby Wildlife Park has set up the unique ‘Keeper Experience’ package.  This unique experience is only available at a handful of zoos and wildlife parks in the country.

The fantastic experience is available to anyone over the age of 18 who is reasonably fit.  We regret that for health and safety reasons, participants who are pregnant, in a wheelchair or suffering from immune suppressant illnesses cannot take part.  It is also essential that all participants have a current tetanus vaccination.

The participant will work with one of our full-time keepers on a one-to-one basis, not as part of a large group. This enables you to get a real hands-on experience, ask as many questions as you like, and get a day that is really tailored to your interests.  Activities will include feeding, mucking out and preparing food.  More importantly, you will learn about the different techniques used at our site to ensure the happiness and well-being of our animals.

Participants will receive a complimentary entrance ticket for one family or friend to enter the park. Other guests accompanying the participant will need to purchase their own tickets at the normal price.  Guests will have access to the park at the usual park opening time of 10am and will not be able to take part in any Keeper Experience activities.

Volunteers will receive a gift pack and certificate as a souvenir of the day.  A packed lunch is also provided.  Volunteers also receive a 20% discount from our animal adoption scheme and any purchases made at the gift shop and on-site restaurant on the same day.

What to bring

Since most of the work you will do will be outside, make sure you bring warm clothes, and bring waterproofs in case of rainy weather. Since many of the animal pens are muddy and therefore slippery, it’s important to wear sturdy boots with good grips on the soles.  Other protective clothing will be provided on the day.

A typical day

9.15         Arrival
9.30         Health and safety briefing
10.00       Apes and Monkeys
While cleaning out the enclosure you will find out about how enclosures are enriched with novel items and new smells to stimulate the animals’ senses and mimic their natural environment.
11.30       Small Mammals
Meet the lemurs and meerkats and find out how the social groups of the captive species are managed.
12.30       Lunch
1.30         Wetland Animals
As well as feeding the water birds and mammals, you will find out about our successful breeding and incubation programme. Learn about why and when a keeper will decide to incubate eggs away from the parent and how they monitor the eggs’ progress to prepare for the hatching of chicks.
3.00         Big Cats
The highlight of most volunteers’ day, you will feed the cats and learn about their nutritional needs. Your keeper will give you an introduction to how cat behaviour can be read to get an idea of their welfare and health.
4.30         Meet the Team
Meet more of the staff and learn how you can get further involved with work at the park. Learn about our animal adoption scheme, what it takes to be a good keeper and where to obtain the right qualifications for a career in animal welfare.

We reserve the right to make changes to this itinerary
